As the Heads of State and Government arrive in Elmau, women’s rights and feminist organizations around the world are still in awe on the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, the constitutional right on abortion.
US President Joe Biden was the first G7 leader to arrive in Elmau where he met German Federal Chancellor and G7 President Olaf Scholz for bilateral talks before the summit. “Women’s rights are threatened. We must defend them resolutely”, Scholz had stated via Twitter on the Supreme Court ruling. It remains to be seen to what extend the issue of gender justice is included in G7 discussions over the two-day summit meeting.
Finding common responses to inflation and the threat of recession, driving forward the climate club, strengthening partnerships for infrastructure and investment and coordinating foreign and security policy issues while increasing pressure on Russia comprise the key topics of the first summit day. Women7 will be represented at the G7 Media Centre in Garmisch Partnerkirchen to follow and comment the discussions. Stay tuned and follow the W7 Twitter and Instagram channel for further updates.
