W7 Germany joins 2022 W20 Summit in Indonesia

19 – 22 July 2022 |

While the German G7 Presidency reached its first peak with the organization of the G7 Summit in Elmau, the Indonesian G20 Presidency turned its focus to the shores of Lake Toba in North Sumatra, where the W20 Summit 2022 took place from July 19 to 21. Women7 Ambassadors Juliane Rosin and Caroline Ausserer attended the three-day summit as delegates from W20 Germany on the ground. The program included dialogues, conferences and panel discussions with inspiring people from all over the world.

“Addressing Discrimination for Gender Equitable Policy Making” was the title of one of the many panel discussions comprising the powerful agenda. Mayra Buvinic, Senior Fellow Emeritus, Centre for Global Development, Renu Khanna, Director, Society for Health Alternative (SAHAJ), Lenny Rosalin, Deputy of Gender Equality, Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, Republic of Indonesia and Juliane Rosin, W7 & W20 Germany Delegate were distinguished speaker of the panel.

“We must do better, no matter what we do, we need a gender lens, measure and put concrete money behind it”

stated Juliane Rosin during the panel.

As part of ‘Power-Breakfast’, also W7 project Coordinator Caroline Ausserer gave an input on the highlights and lessons of this year’s Women7 dialogue and discussed strategies on how W7 and W20 could join forces in advocacy for gender equality. The handover of the W20 Communique to the President of the Republic of Indonesia as G20 Chairman was another highlight of the Summit. Priority issues in the W20 communiqué included gender equality and anti-discrimination, an inclusive economy, highlighting women-owned small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), improving the safety of women with disabilities, and strengthening access to education, technology, finance, especially for women in rural areas, and the role of equity in the health and care sector.

Looking ahead, Women7 awaits the G20 Heads of State and Government Summit taking place in 15-16 November 2022 in Bali calling out to G20 leaders to put gender equality and women’s empowerment in the center of discussions.

„We are leaving the W20-Summit2022 with so many inspiring perspectives, inputs and impressions in our minds. A big thank you to the entire Women20 Indonesia Team, to for the great organization and hosting.“
